#ldw2015

I'm back from a much needed break from blogging. It wasn't scheduled, I just needed a break to catch my breath, even from the good things in life!

Summer came to an end for us yesterday on Labor Day 2015. After their first nap, we loaded up the cars and coolers and headed for a few hours in the sun and sand. I will miss the hot sun on my skin and Roswelle being barefoot most of the day but I'm also excited for the crisp Fall air that is headed our way. We are making it a tradition to spend Labor Day Weekend at the cottage and I have a feeling we'll be taking the same pictures each year, you can see similar pictures from last year here.

Have a great Tuesday, hope traffic is light and your coffee is strong!

Favorite Things Friday

//personal

My favorite personal thing this week is just being back in Dawsonville, GA. Roswelle and I flew down for a very quick trip to celebrate my soon-to-be-sister-in-law at her wedding shower this weekend. My mom had my favorite Chalk Full of Love coffee mug waiting for me which was such a nice surprise! Yesterday I was blogging at our kitchen table, with Roswelle being fed breakfast by her grandmother and great-grandmother and I had to snap the moment. It was a very good morning.

Spongeware may make you think of your grandmother's house but it is making a strong comeback. Tory Burch and Pottery Barn have both recently released a line of the spackled blue pattern pottery. So I was excited to find a set (pictured below) at our local little consignment shop, the Blue Barn. Now I need to figure out a way to make them fit in my checked bag back to Boston....

//food

I spotted this simple idea at Star Provisions during lunch on Wednesday and I'll be bringing the idea home.  Slice a lemon in half, add to fresh or sparkling water, close the cap, and let nature do the rest. You could stock your refrigerator ahead of time for a busy weekend or use this idea at an upcoming shower!

Tonight we are all going to Carson's first home high school football game of the season! We will be in our Dawson County Maroon + Gold as we cheer on the tigers - including Roswelle! I've been searching for a maroon bow over the past few days with no luck finding the right one.  So after a trip to Michael's craft store, I made my first boutique bow! I watched this video over and over again until I got it right - she goes really slow and is extremely detailed in her instructions.  I finally got it right and it is going to match her home-made jersey perfectly :) I'm sure you'll see live updates tonight on Instagram.  Go Tigers and good luck Carson!!!

Out & About: Revelator Coffee Company (in Atlanta!)

Y'all!! Yesterday, Roswelle, Mom, and I visited the Westside Provisions District in Atlanta and oh.my.gosh. it is just the coolest! We had lunch at Star Provisions and at our table sat the owner's wife of Revelator, the new coffee shop across the street. I walked into the sleek yet unassuming, industrial building and was greeted with bright whites, clean lines and well thought out details. My heart went giddy and my camera came out.

Last night, I visited their website and learned a little more about the 5 city shop (Nashville, coming soon!).

"With an emphasis on quality, we provide the South with an enjoyable, approachable coffee experience. From seed to cup, our focus remains on the details. Guided by integrity and pride, we are happy to share our passion with you."

I'd say they hit the mark. I'm already trying to plan a trip back to the area - so many shops and places to eat - and of course my new favorite coffee shop. I think I could run the entire blog of feature posts from the renovated industrial area. I hope you enjoyed this Southern edition of Out & About as much as I did.
{I mean everything, everything about this seating area is perfection

{I love the personal, all Louisville stoneware by the Kentucky-based pottery studio}
{the prettiest espresso machine I ever did see, "the Slayer"}
{I'm having serious regrets I didn't buy some coffee to bring home, I was too busy trying to capture it all}
{OK, can I move in?}

Minted @ Home

It all started with the Caitlin Wilson Design grey spotted pillow which my budget just can't afford at the moment.  I don't have anything spotted in the house and I think it's the perfect understated, neutral print for the benches in the kitchen. My sister-in-law Jenny told me about the Minted Home line a couple weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised at all of the options - including spots (which you can actually filter on ). Much like the stationary and art, Minted provides fabric options from a community of independent artists.  Curtains and pillows are now available with table linens and lampshades coming soon!

Below are the 4 spotted options I currently love at the moment - plus a few other items that quickly caught my eye this morning.

 Fabric can also be purchased by the yard - I would love to use these three prints in my living room or bedroom!!

 {this water-color herringbone print is on point}
{I will forever love this print in pale blue}

Arbonne to the Rescue

I'm so excited to share my first semi-sponsored post! A very sweet reader, Marcela, sent me samples of a Arbonne skin products as she knows I love all natural, nontoxic ingredients. I saved the samples for the end of my vacation, when I knew my skin would need the most moisturizing nutrients and I am so happy I waited. It felt great to give my skin some extra love with ingredients like sea kelp extract and papaya enzymes. If you are in the market for safe, all natural, spa-like skin care I highly recommend checking out their wide variety of products - including a baby-care line and make-up!

You can reach out to Marcela directly http://marcelastromecka.arbonne.com/

I used the SeaSource Detox Spa gelle on my summer skin - specifically on my chest and shoulders, which tend to get the most sun.

I typically just use dove soap and a basic moisturizer for my face. It felt really responsible, healthy, and even grown-up using all of these anti-aging products for my night time routine.

{my favorite item, and their bestseller, was the Cellular Renewal Masque.  Clear and thick, my skin felt like satin afterwards.}

Surfin' USA

I spent the past weekend in Newport, RI with some of my best girlfriends to celebrate my old Boston roommate, Marcia! She is getting married in Puerto Rico in just two months!! As she is quite the adventurous little lady, we took surfing lessons as a group on the main beach in Newport.  It was amazing! I am all about the indulgent brunches and lively dinners on bachelorette parties but an active outing was so good for all of us (especially those that had a little too much tequila the night before).  The salt water and fresh air was healing to say the least :)

If you are in the area check out Island Sports surf shop for some great lessons!

Favorite Things Friday

I don't say this often, but I am soooo sad this week is over. We had the best time as a family, eating so many meals together, exploring outside together, and even taking a family nap! Roswelle was such a happy baby this week and I'm sure it has everything to do with us all being together.

I'm leaving Paul and Roswelle today for a girl's weekend in Newport, RI. While it is always tough for me to leave (and I usually get super cranky right before it's time to go), I know as soon as get on the ferry by myself, my shoulders will relax and I will be thankful for the space.

Sorry for the unoriginal pictures this week, vacation-mode has made it a struggle to get this favorite Friday post together!

Some of my favorite movies have nothing to do with the storyline or the characters, but everything to do with the set.  I love to study the style, the prop placement, and try to understand what makes the setting appealing to me as a consumer. This is precisely why I'm so excited about the new Nancy Meyers movie the Intern. The plot line and actors are super predictable, but I can not wait to study the background. Traditional Home wrote a piece on the movie, focusing on the beautiful set designs, including the amazing kitchen pictured above. Erin Gates also wrote a great post on Nancy Meyer's set decoration on her blog Elements of Style this week.

//food

I'm kinda late in the game, but I'm jumping on the spiralizer band-wagon. Zucchini and Squash pasta is all the rage and tastes amazing. You can also make onion rings if that's your thing :) I miss pasta in my life and I'm excited to give this a shot, and eventually share recipes with y'all! Pictured is the version Williams Sonoma sells, but there are many credible and cheaper options on Amazon - just read the reviews!

Roswelle Gray is 17 months old today!! I took this picture this morning while she had her morning banana.  I'll write a bigger post on her life next month, but she is so happy and fun at this age! She has experienced a few moments of intense anger but they are short, and they have yet to takeover her control-board (reference to the brilliant move Inside Out). I'm so thankful I get to experience life with her and I thank God every night for sending her to me :) p.s we love Hanna Andersson PJs!

My phone died this week - like kaput - like will never turn on again (dang fresh water pond). The first few hours of accepting that I will not have a phone until next week were slightly anxiety ridden but then I gained some perspective and I'm starting to enjoy being phone free. I plan to actually read a good chunk of my book on the ferry ride back to Boston, and even get out pen and paper for a good blogpost brainstorming session. So I apologize in advance for not liking your Instagram photo or replying to a text!

Salt, Sand, Sun, and Sweet Potatoes

We travel to North Truro all summer long, but it is rarely just Paul, Roswelle, and myself at the cottage.  This week has been our family vacation and we have been unplugged and enjoying ourselves as a little pod of three.

It's funny how fast you can get into a groove and we have been doing just that with nightly trips to Longnook Beach for a late day dip in the ocean, some beach volleyball, and sweet potatoes for dinner.

Slow-Scrambled Eggs

Paul's brother, Rob, was the first to start "slow cooking" his eggs, and to tell you the truth, I wasn't a fan (but I'm definitely giving you credit!). Slow cooking them in a sauce pan over low, low heat and taking them on and off the heat while continuously stirring seemed like wayyyy to much work - who has the time for that?? But like most things, the twin gene kicked in and Paul became a fan of Rob's process for the perfect scramble. Paul loathes dry, over-done scrambled eggs and this slow stir allowed the yolk to break in the pan which leaves optimal texture and wetness of the eggs.

Thankfully, Paul can't stand for things to take a long time either! (I'm so thankful we are alike in this way) So instead of standing over the sauce pan, moving it off and on the low heat, and adding ingredients like crème fraîche...he just adds the eggs straight to the large frying pan, unwhisked.  He does keep the heat low, and stirs often, which yields the perfect, moist, scramble ever single time.

Over the weekend we made breakfast for 10 of our friends.  The eggs were a hit and people were intrigued with the "leave the yolks unwhisked" method. The overall positive reception lead me to sharing this as a food post!

Inspired by Stay Strong Mummy plus 40/30/20/10/10

Paul and I hosted 10 of our friends at the cottage this past weekend.  I'm beat to say the least but I'm not sure if I'm beat from hosting or from the workout we did as a group on Sunday.  It's one of Paul's and my favorite "Stay Strong Mummy" workouts.  Stay Strong Mummy is an Australian mum who has a passion for fitness but also has a 3 year old and twin 1 year olds.  She posts workouts that are really challenging but can be done quickly in your backyard - even with toddlers! I'm inspired by her and I love her Instagram posts (@staystrongmummy).

These types workouts will meet you at your fitness level as they are scalable yet challenging.  I'm not able to run long distances at the moment because of a bad ankle, but I'm using these strength and bodyweight conditioning workouts to continue training for the Boston Half Marathon in October.

Here's the 40/30/20/10/10 StayStrongMummy workout:
40 air squats - adding weight is optional
30 lunges - each lunge is one rep (so 15 each side) and jumping lunges is optional for more intensity
20 pushups - from your knees is a good scaling option.  Feet elevated for more intensity
10 burpees - Keep your feet closer together throughout the movement for more focus on your core
10 tuck jumps - if you aren't jumping, bicycles on your back is an option

Prescribed is 4 rounds in this order.  This past Sunday we did 3 rounds as a group which took most of us about 15-18 minutes.  Everything can be modified - movement, reps, and rounds! Listen to your body.

Below I go into a little more detail on the movements:

Air Squat//

Feet planted, knees out, butt engaged, back straight and chest up.  Toes slightly pointed out, and try and get hip crease below the knee crease (get your butt to the ground!).  Also, your knees can come forward, as long and they track over or outside your toes.

Basically, I try and just model Roswelle's form, although hers is much better at the moment as she can get real low!

Lunge//

Knee to the ground, butt tucked, chest up.

Push-up//

Elbows in and back, abs engaged, back straight, neutral neck, chest and nose to the ground.  No snaking!

Burpee//

{sorry for the placement RoRo}

All the way to the ground, hollow core/abs engaged when coming back up (no snaking), hips lead your ascend. These are intimidating, hard and I basically hate them...but you will get better at them the more frequently you do them.

Tuck Jump//

Knees up, up, up, up! deceptively hard!! but only 10.  Also, try and keep your chest up and back perpendicular to the ground at the top of the tuck (mine is coming a bit forward...)

{tuck jumps are currently hurting my ankle so I modify with bicycles}

Kitchen Banquette Update!!

It's really hard for me to share early photos of a home project because I want to explain every detail that is still yet to be finished. However, my friend told me this past weekend that the "process" updates are really important and another friend chipped in "it makes the DIY seem more doable." SO here goes. I'm really excited about how it is shaping up!

My budget is $1,000 and I'm doing really well so far, the last big purchase is the rug which I will have just over $200 to spend. I have included the details of my budget at the bottom of the post.

UPDATES TO BE MADE:
>> Navy Buffalo Check pillows have yet to arrive.
>> Currently searching for a flat woven, fringe-free rug.  Try to decide between a 5x7 or 4x6...
>> I am planning an all white frame wall gallery on the walls.  I will be taking down the shelf and plates. I've been wanting to put up a corner gallery for some time now and I think this is the perfect opportunity.
>> Planning to spray-paint the high-chair legs white to match the all white seating.  I feel like with the table legs gold, the high-chair legs are too much.
>> The table top is from our old high-top crate&barrel table!! We attached it to Ikea trestle legs but I think it needs to be 1-2 inches higher for optimal comfort so I'm trying to figure out how to make that happen.

There is a really incredible story behind this chair. I checked online to make sure the IKEA PS 2012 chair was available at my local ikea store and it was "probably in stock." I loaded Roswelle up in the car for the quickest Ikea trip ever - in and out - I now cut through the checkout stations directly to the warehouse. I went straight to the aisle and bin to find an "out of stock" picture.  The next shipment was not scheduled until August 24th.  I was bummed to say the least. I headed out of the store but decided to roam the "as is" clearance section of Ikea.  Low and behold there was the chair, assembled and ready to be taken home with me!! I considered it a sign from up above that this project was a good idea ;) haha.  The best part? it was marked down 41% - means more budget room for the rug!! After some store credits, the chair cost $37 in total.
{I spray-painted the chair white as soon as I got home}

{the NORNÄS bench has great storage}

{this is a great view of the "nook" I'm working with}

{a weak before/after picture but it's the best I can find right now}

Budget as of 8/17:

Two NORNÄS benches - $400
Two Trestles - $30
Metal Chair from HomeGoods - $34
IKEA PS 2012 chair - $37
Caitlin Wilson throw pillows - $150 (splurge)
Orange HomeGoods pillows - $60
Spray Paint, White Wood Stain, Hardware - $45
Total spend to date: $756
Rug search budget: $244

It's no secret I love a good deal, but what I'm really hunting for is a treasure. :) I recently made a donation to our local Savers shop (which is just like a Goodwill) and I stopped in to make a quick run-through.  What I found is priceless in my opinion.  Original antique white French China plates with a beautiful thin, gold rim. I got twelve for $1.50 each!!! My heart was racing when I realized what I had found - could it be true?? When I got home I googled the label on the back of the plate and discovered that these are original Charles Ahrenfelds plates which were made in the 1800's. I can't wait for the next dinner party - I may have one just to pull these out!

I love learning new things from others (but according to my personality I'll judge you first then be open to trying - see below). Our friend Nate and Danielle are staying with us this week and she has been taking a small shot/dose of apple cider vinegar every day.  I asked her about it and she went lightly into the benefits of the enzymes working with our immune system as natural boosters. The key is to buy raw and unfiltered cider with the "mother" which is gross but holds all of the health benefits. I'm willing to try especially as Fall is drawing near and I will be in the city much more than in the summer.

Fisher Price pulled a strategically smart move - releasing "Fisher Price Originals" to the toy aisle. Vintage is in and your child can now play with toys their grandparents played with - sort of. The sentimental strings worked on my mom last week as she purchased this classic music box for Roswelle because "she had one growing up."

//personal

I love a good personality quiz, my dad had me taking them since I could understand what "Type A" meant and I have been studying myself ever since.  He appreciated the value of understanding yourself, strengths and weaknesses, and using them for the betterment of yourself and the people around you.  This "16 personality" test is quite simple with very comprehensive results.  My results were spot on, I'm an ISFJ or "defender." While reading through the lenthy description I came upon "When it comes to romantic relationships, ISFJ's' kindess grows into a joy that is only found in taking care of their family and home, in being there for emotional and practical support whenever it's needed" - you better believe it only solidified my decision to be a stay at home mom! Something new I discovered was that ISFJs are judgers but then we are equally open to change and trying new things. That is also true for me, I'll think "that's differentttt" when you tell me something I'm not sure about but then I'll digest and probably wind up agreeing it's a good idea.  :)  *(Paul is an ESFJ if you are curious - interesting that we are both "sentinels")

Dining Chair Decisions

Two nights ago I saw this picture on Real Simple's magazine Instagram account and thought "that's what I'm doing!!!" I talked last week about how to customize your home and mis-matching chairs around your table is another great way to add intrigue to your interiors.  I browsed Ikea online last night and paired some chairs that I actually considered buying. (click on the chair names for links)

For a super simple, clean look around your table, I love the JANINGE and REIDAR chair paired together.  You can add a faux sheepskin to the seats for a warmer feel in the cooler months.

I think an ÄNGSÖ chair at each end of the table and two IDOLF chairs on each side would be a complementary setup.

For a sleeker, more modern look in your dining area, the ESBJÖRN and TOBIAS chair are a perfect match.

I have been planning to mis-match the 2-3 chairs that will be part of the kitchen nook I am creating for some time now. It's really fun for me to find a great deal on a chair and I really do love the hunt that is required. HomeGoods, Ikea, Flea Markets, Craigslist...I've been looking everywhere. Below are the current plans for the seating at the breakfast banquette.

This metal chair was the perfect size, shape, and price point at only $32 at HomeGoods.  The catch was that it was originally black which I easily changed with a good can of Rust-Oleum spray paint.

After a lot of research, I have decided on the IKEA PS 2012 chair for an additional seat at our table. I will be changing the color to white and I think the shape will compliment the metal chair I already have at the table.  As always, if I don't love it once I get it to the table (pre-paint), I'll just go back to the drawing board.  No shame in changing your mind!
Bench update: I love the NORNÄS bench and it has worked perfectly for our kitchen corner! I put two coats of a white stain on them yesterday and I am so happy with the outcome.  The Instagram picture below doesn't show the detail or true coloring of the benches but they are now bright and crisp with the wood detailing still showing.

And finally, I was shocked during my research to learn how expensive some of the options at Target are in the chair department. Below is the comparison of almost an identical chair: the left option is from target for $90 each and the right option is the popular INGOLF chair for only $49!

DIY: Shell Shadow Box

It all started with a little rock that looked like a whale.  Paul found him one day on a beach in North Truro and I immediately pictured him proudly displayed in a shadow box.  We both started looking for more interesting shells and had quite a collection at the end of just two days.  For now, Mr. Whale lives with his other ocean friends in a shadow box from HomeGoods that was just $12.99. He may get moved around every now and then but he will definitely be our keepsake from the summer of 2015 on the outer cape.

DIYs don't have to be complex or time consuming and art should be a display of something you love or speaks to you.  This collection of shells was free and the box was inexpensive. I started off using push pins to hold up the shells but they all came crashing down when I placed it upright. I then moved to using sticky pads from an old craft box and those seem to be doing the trick.

I'm planning to hang this at the cottage but something similar would also be an interesting add to a wall gallery!

So About the BostonBelle Blog...

Yesterday, was the first time I didn't blog in 3 months!!

One: there was no real reason for not writing yesterday, I just did not get to it.
Two: there was no real reason for starting to write everyday, 3 months ago.

I got more "serious" with the blogging after I purchased a new lens for my camera. With the new equipment, I was inspired to take better pictures which lead to being inspired to blog more frequently. I've always read that to be a serious blogger you must write on a regular basis and give readers a schedule to expect.  I decided instead of starting out with a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule I would go "all in" and try for 5 days a week.  I had no idea what I was going to blog about or if I even had enough ideas for more than 2 weeks but I decided I was inspired, excited, and committed. I sat down with my notebook and pen and begin writing down ideas for posts.

It has been really fun for me these past few months to have a schedule, deadlines, goals and interaction with all of you! I've enjoyed challenging myself creatively to come up with new DIYs and seeing things through the camera lens.  Having a blog is SUPER motivating.

I started the blog in October 2010 as a way to keep up with family and friends after I moved to the big city of Boston. I used my iphone in the beginning to document things like moving day, a new restaurant I tried, and things that were going on with us.  Paul gave me a nicer camera that first Christmas I was with him and I began post more about DIYs and Food!

If I could model this blog after anything it would be the RealSimple magazine (my absolute favorite!!).  I love to share fun ideas, outfit finds, budgeted projects, healthy recipes and even a little bit about myself. People have kindly suggested that I should try to become a photographer or start helping with home design.  But I really just love blogging.  I really love the process of thinking of an idea, executing all the necessary steps from prep, to props, to photos and then the satisfaction of it being executed - sometimes in just one day!

Anyways, I'll be back to regular posting tomorrow and hopefully I will keep coming up with fun, inspriring things to write about! Stay tuned!

I had an epic HomeGoods find this week, probably because I visited 5 different locations so my odds were high. I have been looking for light and airy bar stools since I moved in 3 years ago but I refused to spend a fortune or buy anything other than what I had in mind. Then I spotted these perfect wooden & rod iron stools and almost jumped up and down in the store!! They make me grin every time I walk past them so it was money well spent in our home. Roswelle thinks they're great too!

My girlfriend Erin brought me cucumbers from her garden this week! She said her husband, Rich, was planning to use them as "baguettes" for his tuna salad and I agreed it was a great idea. We have been using cucumber slices as cracker replacements with cheese and hummus for some time now but hollowing them out and using it as bread brings the cucumber game to a whole other level.

Who knew there were critically acclaimed authors in the baby book world, but Karen Katz is killin' it! We love her books in our household, especially the Princess Baby series - I'm being totally serious!! It all started with Princess Baby, and then we added Princess Baby on the Go (to grandmothers house) and Princess Baby Night Night.  The tried & true test of a good baby book is if the parents enjoy it as well, which we do! Bright colors, cute themes, and plenty of stuffed animals, these books make a wonderful gift for any little girl.

You can get so much out of a girls night: a break, good food, some good wine if you choose, decorating inspiration and great beauty tips! I had all of that (minus the wine) this past Wednesday night.  My girlfriend Emily was so excited about her new facial cleanser that she brought it with her for all of us to try! The Cure Natural Agua Gel is fragrance free and feels like water on your face. Suddenly your dead skin will start to peel leaving a baby smooth new skin glow. The best part?..it's available on Amazon!  That's a win-win for me since I can never seem to make it to Sephora these days.

Inspired by PopO'Color

{I would put these in any room in my house - especially the tan & white pillow on the left}

Last night while at a girlfriend's for dinner, PopO'Color etsy shop came up in conversation.  I had just recently discovered her this past weekend when googling Caitlin Wilson Design pillows and my friend had been given PopO'Color's card from a furniture store.

I love CWD pillows with all my heart but the price can be a real budget bomb. It's really hard to tell your husband whyyyy you need such expensive throw pillows, "they're just perfect" doesn't always work as a valid reason.  So I was googling to try to find cheaper options, and PopO'Color popped into my screen life!

The best news is what my friend, Mel, told me about her experience with the Etsy shop owner - she's SOOO very helpful! She responded to Mel with 20 different links to pillows that might work after Mel reached out to her for help with her living room decorating questions.  They worked on what will work with Mel's color scheme and which pillows would coordinate nicely.

This all lead me to a pairing party on my computer last night.  Her Etsy shop has the pillows organized by colors so it was super simple to navigate through all the beautiful options she has available!  If you are in the throw pillow market - definitely check out her shop - oh and she's a local to Boston too! :)

{for an understated Auburn room - or breakfast bench (wink wink)}

{I think these would be beautiful in a living room or a little boy's nursery}

{these would be amazing in a beach home or a more formal sitting room}

{more Caitlin Wilson pillow options for a little less}

{I really love the print (comes in more colors) on the right from above, it's not chevron or zebra, it's better!}

{for the more serene room}

{for a bold punch!!}

{and lastly a very classic pairing with a peacock!}

5 Steps to Customize Your Interiors

I've had so much fun decorating our home over the past 3 years.  I moved in to Paul's bachelor pad when we got married and immediately started changing things up by adding lamps, throw pillows, and rearranging furniture.  I have learned so much about my design style, which is still evolving, but I'm honing in on "pretty+practical". Thankfully, Paul gives me 99% of decision making power when it comes to decorating and styling our home and in return I try to only add a little pink to each room ;) (and he also gets his garage gym, of course)

I thought I would share 5 tips to customizing your home without blowing your budget or hiring a designer.  I've learned these tricks from reading numerous blog posts, studying Pinterest pictures, and the best way: trial & error.

1 // Don't buy bedding out of a bag, and if you do, don't use it all on the same bed!
I've walked into Bed, Bath & Beyond/HomeGoods/Macy's and loved their bed sets, but I resist the temptation to buy the entire set for my bedroom!!  If you love the comforter, of course use it, but does it come with matching pillow shams and throw pillows?  If yes, then definitely use the pillows/shams in another room - even the living room!  Chances are that you have similar colors throughout the rest of your house. Switching up the designers and brands of your bedding will make it look customized and much more stylish.

2 // Add one unexpected item when styling shelves.
Emily Henderson's bookshelf below has a lot of unexpected items and I absolutely love it.  It's so interesting and beautiful and I need to go redo my bookshelf in my bedroom ASAP.  The sculpture, the miniature monopoly pieces, the little desk lamp, the huge light bulb? I could study this picture for a while. I suggest starting out small by selecting one piece in your house that has a lot of meaning to you (or maybe no meaning but you think it's awesome) and go stick it on a shelf where it doesn't "belong." You might be surprised how much you love it.

3 // Place non-kitchen furniture in your kitchen.

For instance, use an actual dresser to store your dinnerware, have a lamp on your countertop, or even a family heirloom grandfather clock in the corner next to your refrigerator. I love this breakfast nook in designer Jillian Harris's home which overlooks her kitchen, pictured below. Look around your home, there may be furniture that would serve your kitchen well!

4 // Use items in unintended ways.

I love using my decorative antler piece as a bangle holder.  Sometimes practicality needs to be pushed to the side to let creativity have the spotlight. Wooden wine boxes can become storage on walls, plates can become pieces of art, or a room divider can be a headboard!

5 // Love what you love
The biggest advice I have is to embrace your own style, because that is what looks best on you (and around you)! Designer Erin Gates still says how much she loves her inexpensive "Lady of the Bar" and the skull she found in her backyard! If you need help figuring out a color scheme for your guest bedroom, go look in your closet to see what you gravitate towards.  If you love a side table for no other reason than it makes your heart jump a little, you should buy it! It doesn't have to be perfect, it should just be "you". Learn  to love the saying "this looks like you" - as it may just mean you found your style :)

Summer Thunderstorm

This morning we had a New England Summer Thunderstorm. Pop-up thunderstorms might be what I miss most from the humid Georgia summers. They are such a rare occurrence up here in the North and only last for an hour or two at most.

I woke up this morning to thunder, the house was filled with an eerie yet soothing green color, and all was quiet except for the rain on the window. The sun has since come out and it's time to start to tackle my extensive to-do list but I'm so grateful for the morning I was given today.

Backyard Lobster Bake

This past weekend we celebrated my Mom's birthday with an extra special backyard dinner at the cottage. Family Vacations are a wonderful way to spend quality time together but it can make having a special celebratory meal a little tricky. The rush of getting ready after a day at the beach, our baby's impending bedtimes, and the volatile waiting time at popular restaurants all make going out for dinner a challenge. Instead of juggling all of that, we decided to stay in but still managed to have a beautiful meal without all the work.

Paul's parents had the brilliant idea to order steamed lobsters from our local fish market. Most local markets will steam and slightly crack your lobsters, no charge. We baked sweet potatos and boiled corn on the cob for sides but that required little effort. A few flowers from the yard, candles from inside, and white table cloths and we had a beautiful setting for a memorable night, all while the babies slept upstairs :)

{while prepping for the main meal, we enjoyed oysters and shrimp as an appetizer, from the same market}
{eight 1 1/2lb steamed lobsters}
{He couldn't help himself}
We ended the night with s'mores around the fire pit. I added reese's and kitkats to the chocolate mix and it was a great upgrade!
