North End Grocery Shopping

Shopping in Boston can be very different from shopping in Atlanta - especially since I don't live close to a Stop n' Shop (similar to Publix) or Shaws (similar to Kroger).

Instead, I get to go to a cute little grocery store called Going Bananas which is right on my block.  They usually have everything thing I need - although it is tough to find choices such as NonFat or Whole Grain.   Even though I may not be able to find a specific item there, the little grocery store is nice to have on a random Tuesday night when I realize I am short on a staple ingredient.

For Pasta, I go to the authentic Pasta Shoppe located between Hanover and Salem St.

This authentic homemade pasta shop provides almost any type of pasta you would need and also features specialty Italian groceries. Zoya Kogan (the Pasta maker) can be seen on any given day behind the counter folding and twisting all different types of Pasta. (I've seen her before but she wasn't there on this particular day.)
But...I was able to meet the owner Joseph Locilento!  He was so sweet and didn't mind that I was taking pictures for my blog.

My last stop on this particular shopping trip was the local fish market store.  They have all sorts of fresh seafood, as well as a fresh sushi bar.

This particular trip was on a Sunday which made grocery shopping interesting because almost half of the stores and restaurants were closed.  The North End is known as the Italian district - many of the owners and residents are Catholic and do not eat or sell meat on Sunday.  However there are plenty of meat stores in the area to choose from any other day of the week.  I went on a weekday and was able to get fresh ground beef right off of the meat rack in the cooler.  It was really something to watch...I plan to go back and document!

In other non-related news - I've been very busy at work lately (which is why there haven't been as many posts).  But I plan to get back on track with one post every weekday.  My family arrives next Monday, so between now and then, Paul and I will be getting ready for them to be here!  Hope everyone is having a wonderful Tuesday!
