Mistral Brunch

Yesterday, I promised you that Mistral would get it's own post!!  Yes it is that good.  Mistral really has it figured out.  Beautiful interior decorating, beautiful food presentation, and beautifully tasting dishes! I was in brunch heaven.

The sun was actually shining this past Sunday (which has been rare the past few months), so the bright, breezy, organic style inside Mistral really fit the "springy" mood I was already in.

When you walk in the door you are greeted by a large clock - but it doesn't tell time...  Maybe to say to you - time does matter here? or take your time and enjoy yourself?

{I love the lemons, the green, the wood, the whole organic feel}

{I haven't been here for the nightlife - but I have a feeling it would be just as good}

{extra large windows with bright yellow curtains - gave a warm glow throughout}

{you are greeted with apple jam and sweet butter to go with your own personal coffee cake}

One of my favorite parts about brunch are the fruity cocktails...however Mistral doesn't just offer the classic Mimosa and Bloody Mary - they give you a few more fun options.

{I chose the Sangria - which was a little strong for a Sunday morning at 11am!}

{ohhhh....just some sticky buns.....}

Paul didn't hold back - but he did say they aren't as good as his mom's...which I agree! - nothing like homemade. :)

Let me just say we definitely overindulged.....which we love to do at brunch...especially since we had a $40 gift card! At the end of our meal - our waiter sarcastically asked us if we would like anything else... we said yes...some coffee please!!!
{belgium waffle with fresh berries}

{and real maple syrup}

{steak and eggsssss}

{my frittata - nothing else was going to fit on our table}

{why leave dessert for dinner? - above is my version of breakfast dessert}

{someone finished everything - shocking! haha - we needed a nap immediately}

{the aftermath - yes that is maple syrup all over the table... oops!}

thank you Mistral, thank you.  everything was wonderful :)

Weekend IN the city....

Well....Paul was locked up this weekend.

kiddingggg....but we did stay in a jail!  An old, renovated jail that is now a luxury hotel!  Paul won a nights stay at the Libery Hotel in a silent auction a while back.  We decided to make a weekend out of it and stayed in the city all day Saturday and Sunday.  I have to work the next three weekends - so it was a nice relaxing weekend before work gets crazy for the both of us.

After complimentary yoga class on Saturday morning, we walked to Charles St. to get breakfast.  We found a cute cafe on the corner and sat outside.  It was a little chilly but nothing that a coat and coffee can't fix.

{my spill of the day - I get something on my shirt everyday - just a matter of when}

Paul must be reading bostonbelle because he ordered me a small flower arrangement for our room!  :) tulips and gerber daisies....my fav! loved them

We actually passed the store he ordered them from - Twig on Charles St. The flowers were beautiful - on the street, in the store, and in my arrangement!  highly recommend them!

{we went to 75 Chestnut for dinner on Saturday night - quaint and delicious}

On Sunday we went to Mistral for brunch - absolutely loved it - I took tons of pictures and will post them tomorrow!

The Hotel did a great job of keeping the "jail" feel throughout - with dramatic chain chandeliers, original brick walls and even a few old jail cells throughout.  I had a nightmare on Saturday night (about Zombie's?? random and a little embarrassing) wonder if it is because of the old ward we were staying in.....eeek!

Solitary confinement anyone?

The weekend in the city and in the hotel definitely reminded me of our year of long distance travel.  We over indulged and did whatever made us happy this past weekend - everyone needs a weekend like that every now and then!

Snow is in the Air?!

Welll.......it's March 24th and it's snowed last night!  oh yes... I am in a big warm sweater today and I am still using my handy sorel snow boots!

I know from conversations that all of you in down South are enjoying 60, 70, even 80 degree weather right now.  I'm sure you have put up your winter gear until next year (from when you got it out for the one week it was cold in Atlanta). Sorry if I sound bitter - I'm really not!  There are actually perks to the chilly weather - my pale legs aren't ready to be seen by the public yet - so I will stay in my pants and tights for now thank you very much!  :)

Anywho - with all of this cold weather - I crave hot coffee and sweets! I'm just not ready for the iced coffee and icecream/gelato yet...although I do have friends up here that drink iced coffee year round.  I'm just not one for having ice on my eyelashes from outside and then decide to drink an ice cold beverage once I finally get inside....

Lucky for me - I have more coffee shops than I know what to do with! My absolute FAVORITE so far is the Thinking Cup.  It is in the city, located right between our favorite movie theater and the park.

I will meet you there any night of the week - and I must say I am a very good coffee partner - I usually over-indulge with sweets and coffee - so you will naturally feel better about yourself because I will have more than you while we are there.  AND I can be a quiet study/reading buddy or have conversations with you that the people next to us can't believe we are having... but they of course can't help but listen!

Paul and I went a few weeks ago - and I have a feeling we will be going this weekend if this weather doesn't ease up! brrr...

The coffee mug might be my new favorite accessory.  Paul is a very good coffee shop buddy as well....he calmly sits and reads his iPhone - while I I have my own tea coffee cup party if you will... ha!

The barista made me a heart (as shown above) and Paul a plant :)  What is your favorite coffee spot?

This weekend Paul and I are having a "weekend in the city." We are staying at the Liberty Hotel which used to be an old jail! - he won a free night at a silent auction a while back.  I've requested that we act like tourists and take tons of pictures...I'm pumped.

Hope you've had your breakfast!

...if not, come to Salem St.!

This past weekend while my mom was here, the weather was beautiful! Which just meant the sun was actually out and it was above freezing.  One thing I didn't expect up here is the lack of sunshine in the winter - I just expected cold...no wonder everyone (including myself at times) is cranky...there is no vitamin D November through March!  I woke up on Saturday morning to a bright, sunshine filled bedroom and couldn't wait to get up and get outside...after searching for my sunglasses that I hadn't used in a while.

Over the weekend we had great breakfast and dinner out in the city - with a small snack or app for lunch.  On Saturday morning we went to Cafe Nuovo and then to Theo's Cozy Corner on Sunday - both on Salem St. in the North End but both have very different styles!...and I honestly love both of them equally.
Cafe Nuovo opened up about 4 months ago and it is one of Paul's and my favorite place to go for breakfast.  They serve all fresh ingredients, have big bright windows (I can't wait for them to open them in the summer) and play Frank Sinatra - what better way to start your day?
{the day's special - lobster, crab, and shrimp omelet - with scali toast - my fav}

{Paul's side of fruit instead of homefries...vegas prep perhaps??}

{cubed sugar! although I don't use it..it's a cute touch}

{LOVE COFFEE}
{my signature pose according to Paul....}

Next...THEO'S COZY CORNER
It has everything you could want from a diner.  Right on the street, tv's on, chef behind the bar taking orders from the waitress without even looking up, and plenty of ketchup and maple syrup right on your table.
{didn't get a picture of the outside - this picture via radaris.com}
{I thought this presentation was very "diner style"}

{more COFFEE}
{it was our first time here...curious of the coffee...}

{ehh....}

{hhhmmmm...}

{yep! another great cup of coffee on my street!}

{more fresh fruit - this time it was mine...but Paul still skipped his toast! ;) }

{yesssss}

{I was kinda shocked that I was able to order an egg white, canadian bacon, english muffin sandwich}

Overall weekend was great....we did eat at more great restaurants but I didn't get enough pictures for a post...

Happy St. Patty's day!!!  I'm hoping to find some green beer in the city tonight - my fav!

A Welcoming Arrival

My mom arrived yesterday!!  Marcia was nice enough to stay with a friend so that my mom could stay with me in the city.  Whenever I have someone as a guest,  I always like to have simple, warm, welcoming touches for them during their stay. I think fresh flowers are the best way to make a place feel welcoming and pretty all a the same time.  I also like to have fresh fruit, cheese, and water for them to grab whenever they want - whether for a morning or midnight snack.
{brie cheese - may have been a selfish indulgent on my part!}
{fresh flowers from my favorite local flower shop - I'll have to write about her one day}
{I love to put flowers and new, pretty soap in the restroom}
{not only did my mom arrive yesterday - but so did my April issue of Martha!!}
{her favorite flowers by her bed}

So far we are having a great weekend.  We had mani/pedis last night followed by takeout dinner on the couch. :) This morning I took her to my favorite spin instructor's class.  Now we are catching up on a few things in a coffee shop before we go get massages!  Finally, we are finishing off the day at a beautiful wine bar on Charles St. with Paul.  So far the weekend is going perfectly - I already don't want it to end - here's to hoping it goes by super slow! :)

Hope you all have a great, relaxing weekend as well!

Options please!

While I was cleaning my apartment tonight for my mom's arrival this weekend, the news was on in the background and someone said something that probably rings true in my life and yours more than we think.  The man on the tv said "Americans just love options."  ....and I have to agree with him.  The more I have in front of me to choose from (no matter what it is) - the better I feel.  I don't want just one drink at dinner, I like 3 in front of me (usually water, diet coke, and a fun drink).  I don't want the standard 20-30 tv channels to choose from, I prefer 500! I don't want the standard features on a cell phone - I would like as many apps as my heart desires (for some of you - apps are an addiction - you know who you are!).  Naturally, I loved it when I received these four different cooking oils in the mail from my mom.  Completely unexpected, probably unnecessary, but they sure did make me feel excited!

Being my mom - she also knows my taste.  I'm sure when she saw these she only thought about how pretty they would be in my kitchen, not whether or not I would actually use them.  Lucky for her...I will love how they look on my kitchen window sill and I will love trying them in recipes!

{grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil, & canola oil}

{I love how they look like expensive bath products - pretty & delicate}

{not only great in food, avocado & grapeseed oil benefits your skin as well}

Speaking of skin - mine really needs some help after this long winter (which still isn't over) up here in Boston.  Thankfully, the weather this weekend is supposed to give us a little release - it just might be in the 50s on Saturday and Sunday!  Which is perfect timing for my mom's visit this weekend.  She gets here tomorrow night and stays until Sunday.  I am so excited to have her up here for some mother/daughter time - it's long overdue!!

This post was long overdue as well!  Recently I haven't had time to to stop until my head hits the pillow - which is exactly what I am about to do right now!

Sunday out of the City

While I love living in the city, sometimes the county girl in me just needs to get out to wide open space.  When I lived in Georgia I would spend most Sundays in Dawsonville, GA hanging out with my family, playing with Shadow, and falling asleep for an afternoon nap on the living room couch.

Here in Boston, I am lucky enough to have to have Paul's parent's house to travel to on a Sunday.  Yesterday Paul and I had breakfast in the city and then headed to Wrentham, MA.

We were greeted with warm banana bread, cupcakes in the oven, and all the ingredients to make Italian meatballs and manicotti.

{eggs, parmesan cheese, and fresh parsley}
{Ross is joking here - but does it count as a joking matter when it has happened before? ;) }

{we used Paul's Grandmother's recipe which includes three types of ground meat - pork, veal, and lamb}

{an ice cream scoop makes the perfect meatball}

{I should smile more while I cook! :( }

Sandy made chocolate cupcakes and vanilla frosting.  She is definitely the baker in the family with every baking supply you could possibly want in her pantry. When it came time to decorate - there was no short of supply - so I got a little creative!  I used two types of frosting tips and roamed through the kitchen looking for possible toppings.  I messed up a few times at first - all you have to do is scrape it off, place the icing back in the bag, and start over - there's no formula to frosting.

{I started with a blank palette - as you know, a tubing bag is all you need for a mountain of white icing}

{non pareils - reminds me of ice cream}

{toppings have no limits - hershey bar, m&m's, and semisweet morsels}

{hershey bar shavings}

{white sprinkles, heath bar, & heshey bar/shavings - my personal fav}

Placing is my favorite part of taking the pictures - if you've seen me photograph - you know how crazy I can be about it.  Sometimes the most bizarre staging make the best pictures.

{time for dinner - always special touches in the lashway house!}

homemade italian meatballs & cheese manicotti - delish! I couldn't move afterwards.  Hopefully I will be able to run this meal off this week - debatable.

After about 30 minutes - we all could breath again - and it was time for dessert!  Coffee and Cupcakes are the classic dessert duo in my mind.

It was a great Sunday and I feel rejuvenated to face another hectic week in the city.  Well The King's Speech just won Best Picture (which was my pic!! - GREAT movie!) - time for me to get some zzzzzzzzzzzz's!!

Book Shelves

Last night I rearranged our bookshelves!  I decided to rearrange them by color - so each cubby has a specific color.

{before - the shelves have looked like this since we moved in}

{after!}

and because everyone loves before/after - here is the head-on view.

A few of the squares were lacking....we needed more of specific colors.  Then I had the idea of incorporating shoes!! What better way for two girls to show off their favorite pairs of shoes!? Instead of shoving them in our limited amount of closet space, they are now beautifully displayed for all to admire. :)

{blue box}

{leopard box - yessss}

{yellow box}

{gold box}

{purple box}

{and finally the Orange box - which I read is the color of Spring/Summer!}

My creative/decorating juices were flowing - so I moved on to yet another bookshelf.  We didn't have much left over to decorate with - so I pulled out all of my favorite shopping bags and displayed them.  A girl's apartment is the ideal place to display shoes, jewelry, and shopping bags as art/decoration.   I have a few more ideas for this bookshelf - but those will have to wait a little while!

Marcia and I really loved how it turned out - what do you think?

Ps. Two things: Marcia's last name also starts with a W - so the giant W works for the both of us!
And I apologize for the yellow coloring/fuzziness of the pictures.  I haven't quite mastered my photographing at night...I'm much better with natural sunlight.

Girl's Night!

When I moved to Boston I had a few major concerns....job, living situation, church, and friends.

I knew I would need girlfriends in a new city.  While I was moving up here for Paul, I needed to have my own "world" up here in the North or I would have disappeared in his and no one wanted that.

I have a great group of girlfriends back in Atlanta. I went to Auburn with most of them - there is something special about experiencing college with a close group of girls.  During the four years, you see each other at your best and at your worst.  It's hard to find friends that know you well and can laugh at your for your flaws but still love you just the same - that takes time to find.

Thankfully - I have Jenny!(which I pronounce Jinnayyy!) - She has included me since the moment I arrived in Boston.  She has great girlfriends here in Boston that are all extremely close (as they also went to high school and college together) but they welcomed me in to the group without hesitation.  I also found my roommate Marcia in this group! - Basically, it couldn't have worked out any better in the friends department!

This group of girls is always on the move in a good way - up to do brunch, have a weekly girls night, do it up big for birthdays, and they can plan quite the weekend trips!  Last night Jenny had a bunch of girls over for a post vday girl's night - everyone brought an app or a bottle of wine/champagne.

Now for the disclaimer... I tried a new approach to taking pictures last night...which involved me awkwardly focusing my lens at someone without them looking or even knowing what I was photographing - I promised them I wasn't taking bad pics - to trust me - even though I was being the creepy girl with the camera! (every group needs one of those - looks like I've found my spot! haha)  These girls always dressed so cute in their own way - I tried to capture some of my favorite shots of the night.

Food, Fun drinks, and Forever21 Fashion - what could make for a better girl's night?!?

{light pink top, dark nails, michael kors watch, and wine with a heart tag}

{red scarf, messy braid, pink nail polish, and chunky accessories}

{cozy sweater, high boots, and everyone's favorite - you don't know jacques polish}

{peach liqueur, champagne and sparkles}

I believe in the statement - If it's meant to be, it will work out.  Everything with my move to Boston worked out perfectly (with the necessary bumps along the way) - which only confirmed what I already knew
...it was meant to be.

Hearts, Hearts, Hearts!!

Last year Paul and I spent more money on each other than either of us would probably like to admit.  It was amazing, fun, and totally worth it - we considered it an "investment year" - and you could say we got a big return.  :)

After I moved up, Paul and I made a decision to save, save, save instead of spend, spend, spend.  In Paul's own words, we were going to act like squirrels!! ha!

Soo...in January, Paul recommended we cook dinner at home instead of spending way too much at a restaurant.  I agreed we should cook at home and thought about the fact that we always have fun in the kitchen and it would probably be a normal, nice night.

Welllllllll - little did I know.... my February issue of Martha Stewart Living was on it's way to my little mailbox and the entire night was about to take a completely new and interesting direction!  {As I've mentioned before, I love the day of the month when I open up my mailbox and the large, glossy magazine is sitting there patiently waiting to be thummed through.}  As I was doing just that...I noticed a page full of heart.shaped.foods and I thought to myself "I can do that!"

So we did do just that...over the next month I found a bunch of heart shaped cut outs and started to collect my supplies for the Valentine's Day Dinner at a great little spot on the corner of Savin Hill.

I must also tell you that after I told my mom my plans for the dinner, she went out to Williams-Sonoma and TJ Maxx and bought tons of heart shaped everything...which I brought back with me after my weekend at home (thanks Mom!!).  Believe it or not, she used to be quite the cook/planner...everything in my life from the age of 0-3 was perrrrfect (almost to the point of obnoxiously perfect).  Then something happened....she started having more kids...and after she was done with a total of four....she called it quits on the cooking.  So now I reap the benefits because while she may not love to cook anymore, she still loves to buy the cute supplies which she then gives to her 24yr old daughter.  As I want to have 4 babies as well.....I wonder if I will stop liking to cook??!? ahh....not going to think about that today...I'll think about it tomorrow (or in a few years). :)

anywho...back to the dinner!  I must admit I went out.of.control with this - not going to try to dumb it down or hide it - I felt completely ridiculous but very happy all at the same time (that's what love is all about right?!)

Paul took me to Roche Brothers Supermarket in Quincy on Sunday morning to get all of the groceries.  He thought I would like shopping there as opposed to Shaw's and he was right!  It even has a Starbucks! (woo hoo!)  Although we had already driven to one on the way (I must mention we got lost trying to find it and I thought he was annoyed with me for having to have Starbucks (we passed three DunkinDonuts on the way) - there may have been tears - surprise surprise)!

But once we found the Starbucks and arrived at Roche Brothers, everything was right in the world again!  We were able to get all of the ingredients for the dinner for only $68!! I was proud of us - he was happy with the bill and I was happy with all of the baking/cooking I had ahead of me!

I spent the majority of the afternoon baking in the kitchen while Paul worked out in the living room and watched the Celtics game...aka I frolicked around in the kitchen while he did very manly stuff and we were completely content! :)

 {rasberry sherbert heart treats}

{above - raspberry crumble cake}

{valentines funfetti cupcakes to take to work}

For Frosting: start with a dollop in the middle of the cupcake and then spread with a butter knife - best way to frost a cupcake or cake.  You can also create the frosting towers by cutting of the edge of a ziploc bag and using it as your frosting tube!

Paul bought me flowers from the grocery store - $30 total... and I got to arrange them myself....
Worked out for the both of us! Beautiful and Fun.

I wore my pearls...somehow they help me cook better...I swear!  The women in the 50's had something figured out....pearls always make the job better...

Then the fun began....Paul joined me in the kitchen.
On the menu:

Spinach Salad
Raspberry, "Heart" Goat Cheese, Walnuts

Pasta
"Heart" Ravioli stuffed with Ricotta and Goat Cheese, Sweet Basil Marinara

Filet
Simple and delicious filet topped with a "Heart" shaped fried egg

After all this preparation - it was almost impossible for me to get a good picture.  Paul was rushing around the kitchen like a mad man saying he wanted to eat it while it was Hot!  Which I agreed with, but I also wanted to get a good photograph!!!  At one point I think I was literally holding him back while I snapped a picture.

{he decorated his own plate}

Not the best picture I have ever taken, but it was one of the best meals I have ever had!  Paul did an amazing job with the steak, fried eggs, and pasta.  Paul's roommate's girlfriend, Alison, also left her pink birthday roses for our tablescape since they matched and were already sitting there (thanks Alison!)

Hope you all had/have a great Valentine's Dinner!  Valentine's isn't over for me just yet...Jenny is throwing a girls only vday party on Wednesday night - I'll be taking pictures - such a fun group of girls - I can't wait!

Can you guess?

Paul and I made our Valentine's Dinner tonight instead of after work tomorrow night.  Some of you already know - but can you guess what the theme of our dinner was (instead of love of course)?

The post will be up tomorrow morning!  Hope you are all enjoying "loveday eve"...anyone else watching the Grammy's?

{bova's bakery - can you see a little piece of America's history in the reflection?}

{below is the chalkboard at my favorite brunch bar in the Northend}

Southern Cookin'

This past weekend while I was home, I requested a homemade southern meal by my grandmother.  She knew exactly what I meant by southern meal as this is a usual request when any of the grandkids are in town for any reason.  For some reason, some meals just aren't as good as when your grandmother makes them - it must be the extra ingredients they put into every dish - a dash of tenderness, a heap of love, and a sprinkle of care, and a boatload of butter.
The usuals in our family meals are baked mac'n cheese & banana pudding.  Another staple with any meal in the south is cold, sweet, iced tea.  Sweet Tea is really simple to make - you just add cups (2-3 in our house) of sugar!!

While my grandmother is inside making the dishes, my grandfather is outside at the grill.  Down South it is still just warm enough to grill outside without getting frostbite - although some southerners would beg to differ I'm sure.  This past weekend he made perfect ribs which no one skipped over...Shadow was lingering in the background...hoping I would drop one!

This past summer, my grandmother made Strawberry Rhubarb.  It is a delicious topping all year long on biscuits, cornbread, or toast - or you could just do what I did and have a spoon full! (as well as two biscuits covered in Strawberry Rhubarb with my meal - eek!)

Cornbread, homemade Biscuits, banana pudding, and fried okra - all staples down south!
We love anything sweetened or fried.
I didn't skimp out on anything...I was full for the next 24hrs.... :)
My grandparents have a daybed swing on their back porch.  They simply cut off the legs to a daybed and hung it with chains that they spraypainted white.  It is the perfect place to nap after my homemade Southern meal.  I can only bare a few of those meals every now and then...although it had been 5 months...so I was long overdue!

Georgia Home

I went home this past weekend for a much needed escape from the cold, snowy streets of Boston (it has actually been 5 months!).  I of course had my new camera and did a little photog practicing while at home.

Over the past year my mom has really changed the look and feel of our home - and it has been for the best.  My dad passed away a year and a half ago and soon after my mom went to St. Simons to get away and begin to heal.  When she came back in June, she walked in the door and immediately felt a heaviness.  The decorating was somewhat rich/dark tones, but at that moment it had never seemed darker or heavier.  She  decided she need to lighten everything up in the house and it was the right decision in more ways than one.

She was able to change the look and feel of the house, while still maintaining the "home factor" we all wanted.  She began making decisions on her own and for herself which was hard but necessary.  I want to think it was a good start for her there...."in the comfort of her own home."
Below are some of my favorite things in the house that make me want to come in and sit down and stay a while (or a weekend).
{above is a beautiful antique desk that has been passed down through the family}

{the new style is comfy, country, cottage - the farmhouse sink fits perfectly}

{she always makes sure to have fresh flowers - one of my favorite things}

{my Mom's cousin made this table out of old bard wood}
{the table fits the new style perfectly - definitely not nervous about sitting at "dining" table anymore}

{above is a large piece she found at an antique store}

{she has pieces of my dad throughout - a sailboat which rests on her fireplace mantel in her bedroom}

{I love this chandelier which hangs above the bathtub - perfect lighting for a relaxing bath}

{above is "my room" or the room for any female guest - with fresh flowers of course!}
{Shadow was NOT happy when I began packing my suitcase on Sunday night}

{I think he wanted to be packed as well - maybe next time!}

{Carson (12yrs old)  is now taller than me! - not sure how I feel about that}

I'm sure all of you have different reason why you love your home so much.  I just happen to be obsessed with photographing anything and everything - so naturally my home in Dawsonville has a post!  A weekend at home was just what I needed to take on another week of New England weather (snowed again today).  Another great perk was all of the winter items were on clearance in the South! Since I will be using my "winter gear" until April-May, I stock-piled on clearance scarves and sweaters.

Looking forward to returning in the Spring - although I will still be pasty white while all of the southerners will have had a few chances to work on their tans....not fair!

Mini Kitchen

I recently did a post on Mini Pancakes...which were made in my Mini Kitchen!  Moving to Boston has had a lot of adjustments/surprises...one of the major adjustments I had to make was the change in space.  Apartments in the North End (and all of Boston for that matter) are very small and very expensive.  In Atlanta I had a spacious, new, standard apartment.  Now I have an interesting, old, and relatively small 2br/2ba apartment.  I love all of the intricacies and unexpected turns it has - it is anything but cookie-cutter.  The kitchen can be summed up as a nook.  It is small but it has everything we need - except for maybe some extra counter space...but we make do.
One thing I love is all of the natural light...with such a small space, only two windows are needed to light up the entire "room"! By the way, see those handles on the right of the picture?  That is my fridge - and that completes the kitchen!
I collect coffee cups from wherever I travel...
and it just so happens that Starbucks always has souvenir cups... :)

I was given this cup as a gift - it is from the town on the Cape that Paul's parents have a cottage.  I love the crisp white and blue, with the traditional shape and writing.

When you live in a small space you have to get creative.  A bookshelf is now our dish pantry which displays our plates, bowls, and cups in a stylish yet functional way.
All in all, I love my little kitchen.  It is easy to clean up - the only option you have is to put everything back in it's specified home.  It can get tricky with two people cooking at one time... but as long as you like each other...you're good to go.

Mini Pancakes

Saturday morning Paul had to go into work which left me with deciding what to have for breakfast.  It was a pretty day and it felt good to get out in the sun for once (even though it was still in the high 30's).  I walked to the local food market (hole in the wall) and picked out some fresh berries, went to the next corner and picked up some real maple syrup from a local NorthEnd convenience store, then finally picked up some pancake batter from Going Bananas.
Saturday also happened to be Meredith's, one of my very closest friends, 25th birthday.  One of my favorite memories with her was going to IHOP when we were at Auburn.  I've never met anyone who loves pancakes more than she does - so even though I'm in Boston and she was down South celebrating - I thought it was fitting I made pancakes on her birthday.  Maybe I will make some for her when I am home this weekend!  The other memory I have with IHOP/Meredith is being overly full...eating 3 extra large pancakes can be overwhelming...you should probably only eat one of that size...but why waste the other two...right?

Well I think I've found the solution...Mini Pancakes!!! You can eat as many or as little as you want.  Feel the urge for just one more?.. Go ahead! It won't make that big of a difference...

{a tablespoon is all it took}

{add fresh fruit and you have a beautiful little plate in front of you}

{and of course - must.add.syrup.}
{bananas and blueberries}

I wound up making a lot...so on Sunday I used them as a side to a bigger breakfast for the both of us.  Tired of hash browns, home fries, muffins or biscuits as a side?  Make a side of pancakes!  It is a nice surprise to the breakfast plate.

Oh yes...I've shoveled.

Boston has had record snow lately.  I think I heard that there hasn't been this much snow in the month of January in 10 years??  I'm still new to the whole thing so I have had a fairly positive outlook on all of the snow...until yesterday.

Wednesday night we had a "Thunder Snowstorm?" - according to wikipedia it is a rare type of thunderstorm with snow instead of rain.  It left a lot of snow - over a foot in some parts (on top of the couple of feet we already had from the previous storms) - but since we are in the Northeast - everyone got up and starting getting ready to drive to work!

I looked out my window when I woke up and noticed that the roads had already been plowed and it was no longer snowing - seemed like good conditions...so it would be a normal day.  I had ironed my pants, put on warm layers and actually thought about wearing my heels instead of my boots but decided I better not risk it. (since I have already fallen on my face this winter in heels - it's not fun).

Paul had already left for work - he was going to take the T into the city so no need for a car.  When I walked outside I realized there was more snow on the ground than I had thought and when I saw my car with snow covering the tires... I realized I was not going to be able to just drive out over the snow like I had thought...
I only had an icepick for my windows and I quickly realized that was not going to be enough...I walked into Pizzaria Regina and asked the nice old Italian man if I could borrow a shovel.  He showed me to a closet where he had not one but two huge shovels and salt....of course he was prepared!
I spend the next 30 minutes shoveling snow off and around my car.... when I was done I was sweating, wet, and worn out!  I wasn't sure if it ever would...but my car eventually did pull out from it's snow grave.  I immediately called Paul and told him that I had officially shoveled myself out and that I had realized why he left so quickly that morning! He laughed and said he was glad I had finally shoveled snow...even if I never shovel again I have done it once! I would say I'm an official Bawwwstonian now :)

When I saw Paul later that night he had a surprise - new snow boots!!!  He said he figured I needed them with all of this snow and I had shoveled myself out so I deserved them.  I have been wanting a pair of these Sorel Joan of Arctic boots since early winter.

They are perfect because they are fashionable and waterproof (most important)!!
These are not my pictures (boo) - I didn't have time to take any since I just got them last night.  I plan to wear them all weekend though, so maybe they will land in some photos.

This weekend we are going to a new restaurant Deuxave with Rob and Jenny - then maybe brunch with them in the North End at some point this weekend?  I plan to post about both restaurants next week...

I'm looking forward to another low key weekend in the city - hope all of you have a great weekend as well!

SWEET

If you have been out in your city in the last year or two, you have probably noticed a new trend...Cupcake Boutiques!

Twenty years ago people would have looked at you in bewilderment if you had said that it would become commen to go to coffee shop and spend $6 on a cup of coffee (well hello Starbucks and Dunken Donuts!)  I believe a new trend is here...couture cupcakes.
No longer do I go to the local grocery store to pick up a dozen prepackaged cupcakes (blah).  I now go out of my way to get adorable, unique, beautfully packaged cupcakes (and by out of my way I mean I beg Paul to drive out of his way and wait in the car, as there is no parking, while I run in and get cupcakes on Newbury).  You may ask "now why in world would you do that?" - my answer is the same for why I must get my coffee from Starbucks...it's just too irresistable not to!

There are cupcakes shops all over Boston (I could literally keep this blog going by solely highlighting cupcakes boutiques that are popping up all over the city).  However, today I decided to make my way to SWEET on Newbury.  As you will see below...it has more to offer than just cupcakes, it offers a feeling with the purchase, an experience if you will.  Which leaves me asking the question, "what will be the next trend?"...first coffee...now cupcakes...next...??? Once I figure it out - I plan to jump on board at once!

{the boxes above hold a single cupcake, half a dozen, or a dozen+}

{everyone needs a pocket sized cupcake cookbook that they can carry around, right?}

{no corner or doorway is left unsweetened}

{yesterday Paul and I went to a friend's to watch the game - and we didn't show up empty handed}

{the store owner believes the proportion of icing to cake is crucial - looks like the got it right}

{caramel, vanilla, karat cake, blueberry pancake, red velvet, and dark chocolate - to name a few}

Have you ever seen anything sweeter?

Boston Common Coffee Co.

Well...it snowed again today - and a lot!!! I wasn't sure where they would put it all....literally half the parking in the NorthEnd is already gone due to mounds of snow...but luckily a friend (ahem Jon Klerowski) informed me that Boston dumps truck loads of snow into the harbor....makes sense!!  Hopefully they will spend a few hours getting truckloads from the NE - we already had plenty before today's snow!

I am working remotely today in a coffee shop a block away from my apartment - what a perfect Friday!!  The little local coffee shop is called Boston Common Coffee Co.  When I first moved in, I was so excited to see a local, cozy, coffee shop on my street.  The shop is typically filled with college students and the local Italian restaurant owners.  The crowd is warm and eclectic all at the same time.  When you walk in you are more than likely to see a group of friends crowded around a table, a student in the corner with laptop and headphones in use, or two local Italian men sitting at the window bar watching people on the street and waving to friends they know.

Today, I am couped up in the corner working, but I managed to get some pictures before it became too crowded.  I still got a few strange looks as I snapped away but I didn't bother to tell them it was just for BostonBelle!!
{a warm, cozy furnace - which is flanked by two over-sized leather chairs}

{a comfortable couch, big enough to get lost in with a book}

{the coffee bar - sorry for the picture quality - I was getting a few too many looks at this point!}

{extra large pastry and a warm coffee - yes please!}

{the North End Blend - if you come visit me (southern friends) - maybe I will send you home with one}

{my corner - very productive while still getting to people watch}

{my breakfast - just enough - although my coffee is gone - time for a refill}

There is definitely something wonderful about being surrounded by people who are also working on their computers along with the randoms that are just happy to be in a coffee shop (today I'm both!).   Now if someone would just come join me.....Paul... :)  Let me know if you are in the neighborhood!

Little Favorites

Yesterday I spent the majority of the day in my apartment.  I finally took a day to myself to unpack, organize and do laundry which I hadn't done since I returned from my trip to Vail (on December 31st).  It literally took 3 trips from my car to my apt, quite a few loads of laundry, and hours of folding/hanging/sorting....so naturally I took breaks.  During those breaks, I noticed just a few of the many things in my apt that I love!  As the saying goes - it's the little things in life that mean the most....while that may be true....I also like to think it's the little things in a house that makes a home. My roomie and I have a very girlie style in our apartment which I embrace whole heartedly and I am not ready to give up just yet... Below are a few touches that make me feel "at home" when I walk in the door.
{sweet, delicate, trendy salt and pepper shakers - which were given to my roomie by her sister}
 As and Auburn grad, I love anything with an eagle on it (War Eagle!).  I found these bookends online and thought they would be the perfect Auburn touch without being annoying and guady.
If you have been in our apartment - then you know that we have a lot of bookshelves to fill.  We have a mixture of book genres on the shelves which I think makes it that much more interesting!
{the bookends are regal, heavy, and slightly vintage - a perfect contrast to our very light style}

{last but not least, the latest MarthaStewartLiving, its arrival always turns a so-so day into a marvelous day}

Happy MLK day everyone!

French Cooking

For Christmas, Paul, Rob, Jenny and I gave Sandy and Ross a group french cooking class which all attended together.  The cooking class was at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts.  Our chef was great and so was the menu!  There were 6 couples total and we each had our own item to cook off the menu.

Jenny and Rob prepared mashed potatoes and asparagus...Ross and Sandy made french onion soup....and Paul and I baked the bread appetizer!

 I actually got in a little trouble for playing with the dough - it
was "overworked"....then we burnt it slightly....whoops!

Overall it was a great class and a great experience!  Paul and I will definitely be using what we learned when making our homemade pizzas.

**I will add the full menu we used to this post later this weekend!**
